Youth Resource Review

There are a number of publishing companies known for producing quality, genuinely effective resources for youth ministry - Youth Specialities/Zondervan Publishing is one of them.  Over the years we have reviewed many excellent resources from Youth Specialties and are delighted to be able to include more reviews of  some of their resources as well as a review of the Youth Specialties National Resource Seminar for Youth Workers.

I thought this seminar was well organized, very informative and a lot of fun.  Mike Yaconelli's enthusiasm for youth ministry poured out as he very pointedly shared his philosophy on how to best minister to youth in today's culture.  Throughout the seminar he offered a number of practical, and genuinely valuable tools for us to utilize in our own ministries.

Mike began by sharing with us about God's pursuit of the youth worker.  He spoke openly about investing ourselves fully in the ministry and living to the fullest.  I love the quote he offered, "Some people die with half their music left in them."  He stated he wants no music left when he dies.  Mike challenged and encouraged us with how honest and effective ministry will get you into trouble, so we should expect it.

The second session dealt with "Decoding the Postmodern Teenage World" and we had the opportunity to better understand the differences between Modernism and Postmodernism.  Mike challenged us to follow the example of Paul in Acts 17:23 to walk (hang out), look and observe, find (the connecting points), then proclaim the Gospel of Christ.  Mike demonstrated how to use a variety of technologies to reach teens where they are including, video production, instant messaging, E-mail, E-mail newsletters and other internet and multi-media methods.  He spoke about the tendency of teens to cluster off into tribes with similar dress, interests and relationships and challenged us with the need to understand the difference between clusters and cliques so we could be willing to encourage the clusters while still working toward the goal of unity.

The third session covered "Nurturing Authentic Adolescent Faith".  Mike spoke about the need to understand teenage spirituality and it's uniqueness and dealt with:

The seminar closed with Mike giving us some great ideas to "ignite" our ministries.

I found this seminar to be a solid, informative opportunity to connect with other youth leaders, learn from people who truly understand what real, genuine effective youth ministry looks like and is all about as well as receive excellent resources in the seminar resource pack that will genuinely come in handy in my own ministry.  I truly enjoyed the opportunity to participate in this seminar and highly recommend it to youth leaders as it is an awesome training opportunity!  Extremely well done Mike and Youth Specialties!

Good Sex
Authors - Jim Hancock & Kara Eckmann Powell
Publisher - Youth Specialities/Zondervan Publishing
This resource provides complete, honest and "up front" coverage of this important topic - looks at difficult topics with the truth, clarity and in a manner that will get and keep teens attention as it helps them think through and understand how to make wise choices for their lives.  Be prepared, this is not a "typical" youth resource on teenage sex and you may need to take some time to educate the parents of the teens in your youth ministry before you present this to the teens, but it is well worth the time and work to do so.  Extremely well done Jim, Kara, Youth Specialties and Zondervan Publishing.

So What Am I Gonna Do With My Life?
Author - Diane Lindsey Reeves
Publisher - Youth Specialities/Zondervan Publishing
Teens - especially during their Junior and Senior years - have many important decisions to make that will impact the rest of their lives.  I would recommend pairing up teens for this course and then encourage these pairs to be prayer partners with each other through the year to encourage one another as they make decisions.  This resource is an excellent tool to help teens think through and start making these decisions.  Extremely well done Diane, Youth Specialties and Zondervan Publishing!

Youth Ministry Management Tools
Authors - Ginny Olson, Diane Elliot & Mike Work
Publisher - Youth Specialities/Zondervan Publishing
While we want to be cautious that we don't over organize our youth ministry to the point it is more of an organization than a ministry - one that is so structures there is no life and no growth - we do have to be organized to be free to develop genuinely effective ministry.  This is an incredible resource, designed to aid youth leaders in structuring their ministry for maximum effectiveness.  Extremely well done Ginny, Diane, Mike, Youth Specialties and Zondervan Publishing!

The Truth About Youth Ministry

a Youth Worker's Guide to Discipling Teenagers -
the Ministry of Nurture
Author - Duffy Robbins
Publisher - Youth Specialities/Zondervan Publishing
Real ministry that is lasting has to involve relationships.  This book explains how to nurture teens so they will grow while they are in your youth ministry as well as after they leave the youth ministry.  "The Ministry of Nurture" will challenge, encourage and motivate you to be real with your teens and be certain your youth ministry is real as well.  While there are many excellent books available to youth leaders today, this is one I would consider a "must-read" for anyone involved in youth ministry.  Extremely well done Duffy, Youth Specialties and Zondervan Publishing!
