About the Children's Department

resources for effective children's ministry

TEACHER BUILDERS

Too often we find ourselves almost desperate for teachers, so if someone - anyone - volunteers to teach/help we willingly, and with great relief accept their help, whether they are ready to help or not. Now while we want to involve as many people as possible in our children's ministry we do need to have a "standard" of sorts for those who serve in our education ministries.  We are not looking for or expecting perfection, but there should be certain qualifying standards for all volunteers.

  • they have a personal relationship with Jesus by trusting Him for salvation
  • they have filled out an application and have passed safety requirements
  • they truly want to serve and are willing to serve a minimum of three months - preferably 9 months - to build real relationships with the kids
  • they spend time studying God's Word on their own to develop their own walk with the Lord
  • they spend time reading books to challenge and encourage their own growth
  • they are members or regular attenders at your church
  • they have someone to be accountable to - team teachers or prayer partner

We want the people who teach our kids to be effective in their ministry - standards are not meant to discourage volunteers, but rather to encourage them as they serve.

In past issues of "About the Children's Department" and "About the Youth Department" we have reviewed a number of books and devotionals to help those who minister to our kids grow in their own walk with the Lord.  Consider building a teacher's growth lending library of resources - such as those previously reviewed and encourage your volunteers to make use of these books.  "About the Children's Department" and "About the Youth Department" are committed to continue to review books that will make excellent additions to your teacher's growth library.

Moments With the Savior - a devotional life of Christ
Author - Ken Gire

This devotional is unique and powerful as it combines the four books in Ken's "Moments With the Savior" devotionals and takes you through Jesus' life - from the manger to His ascension and helps you pull applications from Jesus' life that will powerfully impact your own as you come face to face with who Jesus is and how He wants to change your life!

FAVORITE FEATURES:

  • 66 studies take a chronological, thorough look at the life of Jesus
  • two months of daily readings
  • each devotional study begins with a Scripture passage on a moment in Jesus' life
  • each devotional includes a meditation with Ken's insight that helps bring to life the people, times and emotions from this "moment in Jesus' life"
  • each devotion ends with a prayer to help you apply and seek God's help in living the application in your own "moments" of your life
  • focus of each study is to help you truly learn more about Jesus as your build a relationship with Him

I highly recommend this book for all teachers, helpers, directors, parents and pastors as it will make a powerful impact in your life which will carry over in your own moments as you teach, parent - live day in and out.  Extremely well done Ken and Zondervan Publishing!
