SEASONAL IDEA - Parent Support

resources for effective children's ministry

It is so encouraging to see all the excellent resources to help strengthen families and assist parents that are available to us today!  I highly recommend filling your church library with these books and encouraging your families to make use of them on a regular basis.  Consider encouraging adult classes to develop "book groups"  where parents get together in small groups to select a book to read and then discuss it together.

Who's In Charge Here? - Overcoming Power Struggles with your Kids
Author - Dr. Bob Barnes
Publisher - Zondervan Publishing

I recommend this book as an excellent resource to help parents develop a plan for effective discipline.  We do not want to yell or argue or continually repeat ourselves in dealing with our kids, but far too many parents find themselves resorting to these frustrating and ineffective methods to try and control their kids.  In this book, Dr. Barnes outlines an effective method to help children learn to make wise choices and to take responsibility for those choices.

    favorite features:

  • part one lays a foundation as to why discipline and responsibility are important
  • part two explains the "hows" and "whys" of an extremely workable and effective plan
  • part three covers spanking
  • part four deals with school and the changes that brings to a family
  • part five covers discipline and sibling rivalry
  • part six helps us understand the "hows" and "whys" related to teaching our children self-control and how to deal with peer presser
  • part seven encourages parents to persevere - even in challenging situations
  • includes a worksheet to help form a plan for your family
  • Dr. Barnes' plan of
  • stating the reason for the new plan
  • explaining the plan
  • explaining the consequences
  • placing total responsibility on the child's shoulders
  • parents being consistent with the plan
  • is one that will work if it is followed and will help children learn to develop character.  Very well done Bob and Zondervan Publishing!

Families Where Grace is in Place
    Author - Jeff VanVonderen
    Publisher - Bethany House Publishers

There are many books on parenting and many books on marriage - this book is both - a book on how to build a strong "grace filled" marriage and how to raise strong, capable children.  We cannot expect to be successful at parenting if our marriage is crumbling.

        favorite features:

  • begins with helpful information on how to develop an strong marriage built according to God's Plan
  • builds on the basis of a solid marriage to build a strong and happy family
  • teaches against legalism
  • excellent information as to what a "grace-ful family, spouse and parent" are like

  •     This book provides solid, helpful information to help you build a strong marriage and family without resorting to legalism that results in chains and pain.  Nicely done Jeff and Bethany House!

    The Heritage
Authors - J. Otis Ledbetter and Kurt Bruner
    Publisher - Chariot/Victor Publishing

So much of how we parent is a result of how we were parented.  Some of us had parents who knew how to pass on a legacy of faith and some of us had parents who did not.  This book helps us evaluate our style of parenting based on how we were parented - the heritage we were given - and then helps us develop an intentional plan for developing a plan to pass on a godly heritage to our children.

        favorite features:

  • part one helps us understand the heritage we were given and about the components of a positive heritage - spiritual, emotional and social legacies
  • part two covers the four "tools" in the "Heritage Tool Chest" - family fragrance, bearings of tradition, the right angle and impression points
  • part three explains how to give the Heritage - to your own family and to people in other families as well
  • includes ideas for traditions in the appendix
  • includes worksheets at the end of some chapters to help you work through the topic and develop a plan to strengthen that part of your Heritage

  •     It matters so much that we do all we can to build a strong Heritage to pass on our legacy of faith to our children.  This book provides excellent information for families who are serious about doing so.  I would recommend this book as an excellent resource for parents to work through in a class or as a group . . . this would help provide support, encouragement and accountability for parents to stay with it.  Very nicely done Otis, Kurt and Chariot/Victor Publishing!

    Front Porch Parenting
Author - Dr. Mary Manz Simon
    Publisher - Chariot/Victor Publications

Just a few generations ago when new parents had questions they usually had family nearby to turn to for help since many people lived in the same community as their parents.  Today it is the exception to the norm that generations of the same family live near each other as now we seem to have families spread all over the country.  So, if you live where you have no family near-by who do you turn to with your questions?  Even if you do happen to have someone to ask questions of, sometimes you just need answers handy.  This book is a wonderful resource for parents as Dr. Simon provides questions and answers for parents to help with their children, from birth through the teen years.

        favorite features:

  • section one covers age-related questions and answers
  • section two covers general questions and answers in six areas
  • relationships
  • behavior
  • wellness
  • activities
  • school
  • seasonal
  • includes an index for specific topics
  •     Dr. Simon refers to her book as "a real-life-parenting book".  We all have questions from time to time about parenting - this book is an excellent resource full of helpful, practical, useful advise.  Very nicely done Mary and Chariot/Victor Publishing!
