Better SAFE than Sued - Keeping Out of Trouble in Youth Ministry |
In "About the Children's Department" we have looked at several excellent resources designed to help a children's ministry protect the children and the church from abuse, injury and liability. Most of those resources have excellent information to apply to youth ministries as well - see them in the archive section of ATCD. This book, "Better Safe Than Sued" goes beyond the issues of abuse - althought it has excellent helpful information on this topic and gives very needed information about how to help protect the kids in your ministry from injury. I know of churches where it is more important to the CE Board that their children's director, youth pastor and other pastors are seen only as the kid's "buddy" - so much so that they risk endangering the kids because they do not want the staff to correct kids who run wild and could hurt themselves or others. While we certainly want the staff and kids to have a positive relationship, it is irresponsible and negligent to allow children and youth in our care to be in situations that endanger themselves and/or others. This book does a good job of alerting us to this very important subject.favorite features:
the stories in this book are true helps you evaluate how safe your ministry really is helps you consider liability and insurance issues information on how to screen and train staff information on staff behavior standards information on how to detect staff misconduct and how to respond excellent information on driving safety safety issues for camp, retreats, summer and winter water sports and high adventure trips helpful information on how to evaluate your own facilities in light of safety issues excellent information to challenge us in regards to games we use with youth and how they could be dangerous covers the topic of young people running out of control and how to develop effective discipline extremely important information on safety and first aid how to respond when the worst happens and someone dies or has a serious injury excellent information on prayer and being responsible sample forms
Safety issues are big issues for youth and children's ministries. Far too many ministries never even think about if their building and activities are safe. We have a responsibility to protect the kids in our care - this book provides excellent information to help churches honestly evaluate where they are and how to have the best, safest ministry possible. Extremely well done Jack and Group Publishing!
