resources for effective children's ministry

Can
you believe the year 2000 is just a year away?! It is always interesting
to think about what a new year may hold, but not only will there be a new
year - this next year will see a new millennium! I am sure the new
millennium will bring many new, interesting and exciting things - think
of all the advances the last millennium saw! It is also bound to
bring many challenges and difficulties as well. While there are many
areas we need to work on in our churches and homes, one vitally important
area is to help strengthen our families. Today's families have so
many challenges - they want to be healthy and strong, but so many are not.
In this issue of "About the Children's Department" we will look at resources
churches and families can utilize to help strengthen and equip families.
There are so many excellent parenting resources we need to help make the
parents in our church aware of these and then support and encourage them
to implement what they learn.
We will also look at resources
to help our teachers and parents grow in their own walks with God to help
them be more effective teachers and parents!
It may seem impossible, but it
is almost time to begin thinking about VBS for the summer! In this
issue we will give you a "sneak peek" at the VBS resources for this next
summer of ministry and I would like to once again encourage you to make
summer ministry to kids a priority at your church. I know of more
and more churches that are choosing to eliminate all or most of their opportunities
to minister to children in the summer, but three months is one quarter
of your year and that is an extremely long time to have no opportunities
for effective ministry to our kids. Many churches tell me they have
problems recruiting teachers in the summer, but I find that volunteers
live up to the expectations we have of them and if we say that summer ministry
to kids is not important, they will not volunteer. If we say that
summer ministry to kids IS important and people will step forward to be
a part of this ministry. VBS is one of our best curriculum buys for
the year - I encourage you to plan to utilize at least two or three VBS
resources . . . we will talk more about this in our special VBS issue the
beginning of February, but for now . . . the "sneak peek"!
